Beijing 2008 the greatest ever? (Discussion)

I think they were and I think will be hard for London 2012 to top such. From the opening ceremonies, to the closing, and everything in between was done first class. Say what you will about China but they placed forth a terrific display all around. I know they spent a lot and I do mean a lot of money but it was well worth it. The Olympic Games do not come around that often. Nicely done Beijing 2008!

Sure they were great, but maybe not the greatest ever… I personally remember the Sydney games as really great, but I was easily impressed back then. And I have faith London can top this, it’s London Calling!

The Beijing games were entertaining, the opening and closing ceremonies were very well done.

But you also have to consider all the controversies and problems with the Beijing games. Not trying to offend anyone or take sides… but the pollution, and torch rally protests and the Tibet issues on one hand, and then the games themselves- the “ceremony switch” using a good looking girl instead of the real singer, the whole underage gymnasts allegations, and the Cuban Tae Kwon Do guy who kicked the referee in the head…

Overall I think Beijing 2008 were great games… but maybe not the best ever.

I would have to say first off that I haven’t been watching the Olympics on a regular basis, this year or the ones past, however from my little tidbit experience, I may be able to contribute something. I think nowadays there’s more and more ability to have topics such as human rights and other things upsetting about the host countries become a spotlight within the Olympics. Because the sports played are really being seen by a global audience why not bring important issues to the forefront. For this reason, I would say that impacts a different aspect of the games. Yes, there was controversy, but we’ll see that there will be controversy in future games and ones past. I believe having global attention on the human rights claims was a good thing, it is something that needs to be addressed by the global community. However in light of the Games, it may not have had the most positive affects for China’s reputation.

The games themselves were quite impressive. I wasn’t able to see the opening ceremonies, however just taking in the architecture of the buildings is quite impressive. China really did outdo themselves and provided an almost fantasy-world for competitors to come to. The events stirred great response, top athletes from all over the world shone, and I think that’s what the Olympics are about, year after year.
