Who are your favourite Olympians? (Discussion)

acrosstheuniverse saidTue, 12 Aug 2008 20:40:34 -0000 ( Link )

Are there any athletes in the Olympic race from the Beijing Games or ones past that you like to keep up with? Who are the hopefuls you’re rooting for? Or have felt pride or loss with them in past Olympic competitions?

Competitors like Michael Phelps of the USA that smashed the world record for the 400m individual medley. He has 7 more races to go.

Who are you watching?

Phelps is absolutely insane! He already has like what, 5 gold medals up his sleeve? (Do swimsuits even have sleeves?) That’s just crazy, you have to let somebody else win a few too.

I was watching the Phelps race last night (where he once again won gold and set another world record) and they were talking about his training diet.

Get this! Each meal he eats is 4,000 calories!

Breakfast: Three fried egg sandwiches; cheese; tomatoes; lettuce; fried onions; mayonnaise; three chocolate-chip pancakes; five-egg omelette; three sugar-coated slices of French toast; bowl of grits; two cups of coffee

Lunch: Half-kilogramme (one pound) of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread; energy drinks

Dinner: Half-kilogramme of pasta, with carbonara sauce; large pizza; energy drinks

Now I know why he wins… all the other swimmers are scared he’ll eat them so they let him win!

    No, that’s a total joke.

I watched Phelps swim his last race, the one that earned him his final gold, 8 out of 8 giving him yet another world record, 7 of those out of his eight swims. I was amazed at his technique. As soon as he jumped into the water, he instantaneously picked up the lead in seconds. The man swims like a fish, it was thrilling to watch, and he’s only 23!

Usain Bolt from Jamaica is quite the runner… he just won both the 100 m and the 200 m sprints, setting crazy world records of 9.69 and 19.30 seconds. Apparently he’s the win both since Carl Lewis back in 84. Impressive!

Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis come to mind because of their fine displays on center stage.

Honestly I am tired of the swimming and Phelps, We should ask ourselves how many medals need to be awarded for the same swim, there is no need to have as many swim meets..

Why do we have so many different swims? Why do we have so many runs? So many wrestling weight categories? So many cycling and rowing competitions? And since when is table tennis a real sport (and if it is, why isn’t bowling and air-hockey in too)?

I don’t have an answer for any of these. I can why it’s a bit unfair that a swimmer becomes a top medalist just because he can compete in 8 similar swims, but a runner doesn’t have 8 similar races to score medals in. However, winning 8 swims is still an incredible accomplishment.

It is an incredible accomplishment. ChelseaFC brings up a great point. How is it possible for a swimmer to win 8 races, do other sports give the same flexibility to the best in their sport? Do say gymnasts have the opportunity to train for 8 events and have a good chance of winning them all? Maybe we should be distinguishing between the different events, making one strive and train specifically for each event, rather than focus on a couple strokes that can be either speedy and fast or speedy but with longevity.
