Which country are you cheering for? (Discussion)

oLahav saidTue, 12 Aug 2008 20:18:57 -0000 ( Link )

Seeing as the games are taking place right about now, which country are you cheering for?

Are you cheering for one country in general, or do you have special favourites in certain events?

Do you think that, other than growing up in a country, people cheer certain nations for other reasons too? What can those be?

And of course, regardless of your favourites- which country do you think is going for the gold in which events?

Of course I am cheering for Canada, although they are never much of a force in the Summer Olympics. I could see Canada winning a medal or two in Equestrian.

I do find myself also cheering for the Austrians, my family is from there. I think it all comes down to the country you grew up in as well as any sort of relation you may have to the country.

I’m sure some people would also cheer for the underdog. I find myself if it’s a Beach Volleyball match, for example, if an underdog team is playing a well ranked team, I’ll cheer for the underdog to pull off an upset victory (unless it’s against Canada).

Looks like up to now, our host country China is dominating the medal count with 27 (17 gold), and the US isn’t too far behind with 29 but only 10 gold. Does this surprise anybody?

South Korea and Germany are close with 6 golds, and Italy, Japan and Australia have 4 each.

Any bets on who’s going to go for most golds by the end of everything?

Where is Canada so far in this medals race? Has anyone been keeping score?

We got a couple of 4th places! I think that should count as like half a medal or something… I say copper.

Update: We know have 3 golds, and a total of 15 medals. Yay! 16th national rank by gold and 12 (tied with the Netherlands) in ranks by total. Looks like Canada made up for that rough start.

I am rooting for the home nation, China. I hope they win as many medals as they can.

Definitely does look like China is dominating the medal count with most golds. Is it the home advantage, or are they just good at sports and have more (and better) athletes?

There’s probably a lot of pressure to do well since they’re hosting it! So the enthuasiam must play a part. I don’t recall them ever doing this well in past Olympics…

Chinatown on Sunday was just wild! Cars honking, flags flying, this part of Toronto was definitely very proud of their efforts!
